What size of a lampshade do I need?

What happened to the lampshade kits?

We still sell all of the same lampshade making supplies that we used to. In the past, we sold them in all-in-one kits that included all of the materials in a single box presentation. We've since decided to deconstruct the kit and offer each piece individually. This way, you're free to mix & match the exact size components that will work best for you, instead of adhering to the height and diameter dimensions that we had previously decided on. Not offering all of the supplies in a kit format gives you even more freedom to make a unique lampshade that you'll love.

Can I make a lampshade other than the drum / cylindrical shape?

The drum lampshade is the simplest shape to start with, but it's definitely possible to make a tapered/conical lampshade using a similar technique and the same materials. Tapered lampshades have a different top & bottom diameter, and require an arc-shaped piece of styrene. You'll need to carefully measure and cut your styrene. Check out this blog post that shows you how to make a tapered lampshade. Or find out how to make a panel lampshade on our resource page.

Can I use a DIY Lampshade kit to make a shade for a hanging pendant light?

Absolutely! Larger sized lampshades make hanging light fixtures look beautiful.

Our short video tutorial below will show you how to install a lampshade onto a pendant light so you can hang a lampshade from the ceiling.

What type of lampshade ring will fit my lamp?

The most common lampshade ring found in the US is a 'washer' or 'spider' style ring, which is used in standard lamps with harps & finials. You can find these lampshade rings in our store

My lamp doesn't have a harp. How can I attach my lampshade?

If you wish to use a lampshade that's designed to work with washer-style rings, you'll need a lamp harp kit, which you can buy in our store, or you'll need a lampshade bulb clip adapter, which we don't sell. Our lamp harp kits come in 8 inch, 9 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch heights.

What’s the difference between a Euro fitter ring and a Spider/Washer ring?

These lampshade rings attach to your lamp in a different way. Euro fitter rings are generally for IKEA lamp, and some Target lamps, while Spider/Washer fitter rings are more common in the United States. Lampshades with Spider/Washer fitters are for lamps with harps.
